Sedation Options
Comfort Options Available at Our Clinic
We will review your health history, treatment needs, and comfort level before recommending a sedation option.
Nitrous Oxide Sedation
Nitrous oxide, often called laughing gas, is a mild form of conscious sedation used to help patients feel relaxed during dental treatment. It is breathed in through a small mask placed over the nose.
With nitrous oxide, you remain awake, responsive, and able to breathe on your own. The level of sedation can be adjusted during the appointment, and oxygen is given at the end to help the effects wear off quickly.
Most patients are able to return to normal activities after nitrous oxide, but our team will provide instructions based on your appointment and health history.
Oral Moderate Sedation
Oral moderate sedation uses prescribed medication taken before the appointment to help reduce anxiety and create a deeper sense of relaxation than nitrous oxide.
You may feel drowsy and may remember less about the appointment. Because the effects last longer than nitrous oxide, you will need a responsible adult to bring you to and from your visit if oral sedation is used.
Our dentists will determine whether oral moderate sedation is appropriate after reviewing your medical history and planned treatment.
Nitrous Oxide Benefits
Why Patients Choose Nitrous Oxide
Nitrous oxide has been used in dentistry for many years and is a common option for patients who want a lighter, adjustable form of relaxation during treatment.
When Nitrous Oxide May Not Be Recommended
Nitrous oxide is not right for every patient. It may not be recommended for patients with certain breathing conditions, severe nasal congestion, COPD, emphysema, some chest or respiratory concerns, or strong claustrophobia related to wearing a nose mask.
Before any sedation appointment, please tell our team about your medical history, medications, pregnancy status, and any breathing concerns. This helps us recommend the safest option for you.
